Often mistaken for a girl. » Occupation: Student Personality TypeOutwardly, Momiji is a happy-go-lucky little boy. He is bubbly, charming, and kind; some might say he is the embodiment of the old adage, "smile, and the world smiles with you." It is very hard to resist his bright [and sometimes mischievous] smile. He is a kind, compassionate, and loving person, if not a bit silly at times.
Inwardly, Momiji still is an overall happy person. He does have dark moments --hating himself afterward because of them-- when events from his past come back to haunt him. He tries hard not to show it, but he harbours a lot of pain and hurt for one so small. Who is Momiji?Momiji is the fourth Sohma to meet Tohru. They first encounter one another on Tohru's way home from work; at the time, she was unaware she was working in a building owned by the Sohma family, and Momiji had happened to be there. At first glance, Tohru is very befuddled and wonders if she is looking at a pretty little girl, or a very cute boy. Her confusion is only compounded when he speaks to her in German and plants a sweet kiss on her cheek.
They meet again when Momiji and Hatori show up at the school festival. Momiji makes a grand entrance by hopping on Yuki's back and asking why he was dressed like a madchen [girl]. The girls fawn over the cute little thing as he explains that his mommy is German and his daddy is Japanese, hence his blonde hair. Tohru is once more bewildered until Kyou explains that he is another Sohma cousin, along with his tall and stoic-looking companion. Upon finding out Tohru knows about the curse, Momiji eagerly tries to hug her, only to be stopped by an irate [and somewhat jealous] Kyou. Feigning a sad look, Momiji baits his cousin: "I bet you hug her all the time." Kyou becomes embarrassed and flustered, releasing his hold on the little boy; Momiji takes advantage of Kyou's awkwardness and hugs Tohru --- only to transform into the rabbit and attract everyone's attention. Yuki creates a diversion by pretending to be sad that no-one is paying attention to him in a dress any longer [despite his earlier irritation at being asked to wear it], and Tohru sprints the transformed usagi to the roof.
Momiji begins to spend more time with Tohru, visiting her often at Shigure's house. For White Day [the day where boys give girls the equivalent of a Valentine's day present, since Valentine's is for girls to give boys presents], Momiji invites Tohru to join him at an onsen [hot spring] for the weekend. While Tohru is oblivious that Momiji is flirting with her, Kyou and Yuki are more than aware, and end up accompanying the two. The weekend is filled with much fun and laughter, many attempts by Momiji to flirt with Tohru, and Kyou and Yuki being frustrated because of it. At the end of the trip, it is revealed that Momiji is the same age as Hatsuharu [much to Tohru's shock], and will be attending their high school the following year.
One day, Momiji visits Tohru at work. As they walk the building, they run into a stunning woman that looks a lot like Momiji, and her little girl. The woman seems surprised to see Momiji there, and tells him kindly that he should go home, because his mother will be worried about him. Momiji smiles and agrees. As the woman and girl leave, Tohru recognises the woman from a picture she had seen earlier -- it was Momiji's mother. She questions the usagi, who smiles sadly and confirms her suspicions. He tells how his mother had been shocked and disgusted when she held him after his birth and he turned into a rabbit. As Momiji grew, his mother grew more and more depressed, ignoring her son and hating him more with each passing day.
Finally, the weight is too much on her; she approaches Hatori and asks for her memories to be erased so she would never have to remember giving birth "to that monster." Momiji overhears them.
With her memories erased, his mother goes back to being a happy woman, even having another [non-zodiac] child: a little girl she names Momo. She thinks that Momiji is the child of another Sohma couple, and denies that they look anything alike. In order to protect his new-found happines, Momiji's father asks him to stay away from them; wanting his mother and father's happiness over his own, Momiji sadly but willingly and cheerfully obeys. However, his big-brother instincts get the better of him, and he keeps an eye on his little sister from a distance.
Though he explains everything with a smile, Tohru can see he is hurting. With tears in her eyes, she hugs the boy, triggering a transformation. Momiji is surprised at first --they are in a public building after all-- but then begins to cry himself, finally expressing the hurt and sadness he was keeping bottled inside.
This summer, Momiji joins the rest of the Sohma juunishi [sans Akito, Kureno, Rin, and Ritsu] for a vacation at their summer home. Tohru is invited along, much to Momiji's enjoyment, and they proceed to have a fantastic time. Their merriment is marred, however, by the arrival of Akito. He visits the summer home late at night, and it is Momiji who answers the door. He is frightened by Akito's sudden appearance, and knows instinctively that he was there to cause Tohru trouble. The young man demands Momiji fetch the girl, but the usagi's love for Tohru outweighs his fear and desire to keep the head of the family happy. He refuses, and Akito is incensed; as punishment, he slaps Momiji as hard as he can --- right as Tohru walks in.
When Tohru comes back from speaking with Akito, sporting a set of bloody scratches on her cheek, Momiji is still standing in the doorway, his eyes dull. Tohru reaches out to him, and he bursts into tears, apologising for not being able to protect her. Tohru cries as well, hugging the boy [causing him to transform]. They head to bed, and the rain seems to wash away the night's troubles and sorrows. Their last day at the beach house is a pleasant one, and Momiji is seemingly back to his old self.
Even though he has not told her, Momiji is in love with Tohru. However, his love for her and desire to see her happy outweighs his own feelings; he can see she is in love with Kyou, and perhaps Yuki as well, and so will probably never confess his love. Hopes, Dreams, and GoalsMomiji's desires are simple -- go to school, keep his sister safe, keep Tohru safe and happy, and have fun. Character UpdateMomiji has just started high school, along with Hatsuharu. He is still spending as much time as possible, between school and classwork, at Shigure's house in order to be with Tohru.
