Personality TypeSohma Yuki, young, attractive and popular, is the heartthrob of his high school. On the surface, Yuki is viewed as the kind prince in his school, who is looked up to and admired by both male and female. He possesses a pleasant personality, kindness hovering over every action he chooses to do. His smile is so sweet and serene that it woes the souls of nearly the entire female student body. Being helpful seems to be integrated within his person, always lending a helping hand to those in need, especially shown when he invited Tohru to stay with him and Shigure when her tent had been lost in a landslide. He is respectful, active and athletic, excelling in nearly every sport presented to him. He is also gifted with vast intelligence, earning him top grades thus making him the perfect student. Consequently, because of his perfect personality and attractive features, the Yuki Fan Club was born, led by Motoko, the founder and leader.
However, all this is just on the surface. It was a façade, a dream… the outcome of his need to conform to please society. He only acts kind in front of his colleagues because he wishes for them to like him, to accept him. Although it was revealed later on that he would rather be friends with them rather than be praised and admired by them. He did not wish to be rejected like in the past thus he decided to adapt for himself the kind of personality that would attract people. It is because of this, he does not care nor appreciate who he is as his personality was shaped to please others and conform to society, which he incidentally exceeds at. He was in fact a fake. He was not the person everyone thought he was. He hated himself, and could not, would not let anybody see how he really was… his true self.
Despite all this, it doesn’t mean that everything Yuki had been was a façade. For one thing, he is indeed intelligent, his grade being the proof of that. Intelligence isn’t something one can easily copy, unless of course he had been cheating all those years, which is highly unlikely due to his character. He is very sharp, often seeing through the dog’s sneaky plans and he very aware of his environment, probably achieved through his martial arts training. He also possesses a sense of maturity much higher than most of his classmates, maybe due to his troubled past. He is calm and rational, often staying cool despite the troubles that may come by his way. His level-headedness is often an asset, especially since the nezumi has to deal with a LOT of idiots. He is also very serious in what he does and is surprisingly a wonderful gardener, carefully caring for his secret base, the garden that he takes care by himself. Yuki is kind, although he himself does not believe in this. He himself tells Tohru, “That isn't me. You see, they accept me because I'm nice, while I only act nice because I want them to accept me. It's not how I really feel. I'm not a good person. I'm just...selfish.” He does indeed possess kindness deep within his heart, most evident when he was a child. Another demonstration of his kindness is during the festival that his school held and Momiji turned into a rabbit, making the students suspicious. Yuki sacrificed himself by using his female features to divert their attention to him, despite his dislike so that Tohru could run away with Momiji in his rabbit form.
Mystery seems to follow the ‘prince’ wherever he goes. Not much is known about his childhood, his past and his family. He does not help at all, never mentioning to anybody how his life had been before he moved into Kaibara High School. Yuki isn’t one to wear his emotions on his sleeve, opting to keep his feelings hidden and locked under his securely closed lid. Even though everyone admires him, females especially, he rejects every girl that confesses to him and refuses to be hugged (mostly due to his curse). In a way, he is just like Haa-san, in regards to his eyes being the only clue as to what the young Sohma was thinking about. A slant in the eye would signal the rat’s hatred and other times, when his eyes widen, it shows his genuine surprise. Still, all in all, Sohma Yuki still remains a mystery to most of the student body population, only really opening up to Tohru and a few others.
One would not define Yuki as the ‘sociable’ type. In fact, he could be described as anti-social. Aside from the good-natured manners that he often bestows upon his fellow classmates, Yuki is not one to strike a conversation first, frequently speaking only when spoken to or when he has something important to say. He instinctively separates himself from people, fear of rejection stopping the nezumi to get close and interact with others as freely and as openly as he should. He always has his guard up, and although he still shares a kind smile with his classmates, this smile is more of a façade, never reaching his eyes. If not for the ever-present female populace that often crowd around him, he would have looked more withdrawn and alone as he felt. It is because of this reason that the rat is jealous of the cat, who, although doesn’t seem to get along with people at first, ends up becoming fast friends with them, like moths to a spark of light. He wishes to become more like Kyou because even though he can’t be part of the zodiac, people in general accept him for who he is which is something that Yuki has always wanted.
The majority of people tend to make the postulation that Yuki is perfect, most especially the students that make up the high school he is currently attending. His features and personality had enchanted even Tohru, once calling him ‘tall, dark and handsome’. However, this is not the case. He has just as many weaknesses as the next person, although it would seem that they’re just not as magnified or shown as they should be.
Although not very palpable, Yuki is actually very lazy. For one thing, he is not a morning person, often dredging the morning sun and having to wake up and leave his room. This leads to the reason he is not fully awake in the morning, often wandering around the house half-asleep, only half-aware of what he is doing, whether climbing down the stairs or fighting Kyou with his full strength when the neko plans his sneaky attack. Evidence to this is how he takes into account housework. If Tohru had never moved into Shigure’s house, it would have stayed the pigsty that it had always been, piles of trash covering every inch of it. The reason for the mess? Yuki’s obvious disregard for housework. Lazy much? Of course. :3
Another one of Yuki-kun’s weakness is the kitchen, or rather, housework in general. Hand him a plate and you’ll be a hundred percent sure that you’re not going to get it back in one piece. Ask him to make dinner, and you’ll find something charcoal black in return, slightly edible if you’re really lucky, still moving if you aren’t. Tell him to tape up a paper door, and expect that hole to get bigger by the minute, the entire door breaking down if left entirely in his care. In short, he is not the best person you would turn for when in need of housework to be done. He is also uncharacteristically clumsy at times, although this fact is not exceedingly well known.
An aspect of himself that most people don’t know about is his sarcastic and dark side that he hides within his heart. He holds a great hatred for himself, for his cursed self and for the fact that he is weak and abnormal. He also has an inferiority complex, especially when compared with the zodiac’s ‘god’ to the point that he fears her to death. Her name brings enough fear into the young Sohma’s heart to make him panic and relive his past. Thus, to counteract with this fear, he takes on a sarcastic and slightly angry attitude, most evident within the presence of people such as Kyou and Hatori, during the earlier parts of the manga. Because Hatori had erased his friend’s memory, it had ruined their relationship, although it soon gets better as time goes on. Meanwhile, his hatred for Kyou developed due to jealousy and the hatred that Kyou had developed since they first met. Yuki also doesn’t seem to trust people as easily as he would have; fear of getting hurt and being rejected once again eating away at his soul. All these are influenced by his dark past in the Sohma household, causing despair and darkness to sip into Yuki’s world.
Who is Yuki?History
Sohma Yuki’s initial memories start off when he was a young child, possessed by the Rat of the zodiac. When he was very, very small, his world consisted of Akito, his mother, and whatever scenery he could see beyond the sliding door. Those things and nothing else.
His past, his story starts out in the Main House, where Akito, the head of the house and ‘god’ of the zodiac resided. It is here where young Yuki is brought by his mother to be given to Akito as her playmate and companion, although he had not known that Akito was actually a girl, and not the boy he presumed her to be. Upon their first meeting, Yuki shed a tear against his own will. Within that moment, an inner struggle occurred within the young boy. He had wanted to see him, yet he didn’t want to see him. He wanted to hold him close, and yet run away. He loved and hated him. This feeling was called and explained as a ‘bond’… an unbreakable karmic link between ‘god’ and his zodiac members.
All his earliest memories are all with Akito.
As Akito’s playmate, he would spend all his days indoor, by Akito’s side. Akito would often comment about how the rat is the greatest member of the zodiac and how it’s the one closest to god. Their relationship then was okay, if not stable. However, one day Akito lost it. She soon grew bitter, angry and grew to hate and despise Yuki. She had total control over him, having been abandoned by his mother in exchange for money and power, and would use that control to degrade him, little by little. Inch by inch that it is a miracle that Yuki had not become insane. She would tell him terrible things that he would never forget. He was disgusting, a filthy rodent that no one would want to befriend. He was abnormal, an abomination, a mistake. He wasn’t wanted, rejected, abandoned, hated to the point that his own parents would give him up in exchange for money and power. She would tell him all these things and say how he was the most hated member of the family and that if it weren’t for her; he would have no reason to exist.
On top of being mentally abusive, Akito was often physically abusive as well, and would sometimes lock Yuki away inside a dark room to torment him. A whip, a slash, a slap, a throw… Akito’s fury knew no bound, and everything that went inside that room was always kept a secret. As a result of the combined abuse, Yuki has terribly low self-esteem, and suffers from self-hatred and an inferiority complex, deep emotional scars that have yet to heal. Apparently, the juunishi knew about the abuse, but they didn’t, or rather, they couldn’t do anything. For some time, Yuki went through a phase where he just wouldn’t talk to anybody. It is due to all the emotional, physical and mental abuse he suffered while growing up, that Yuki has a hard time interacting with people. Why he closed the lid that led to his feelings.
Days passed as Yuki continued by before he realized that he had never shared a word with the other members of the zodiac. He was always by Akito’s side, never socializing with the people that were supposed to be his family, including Ayame, his older brother. Akito’s statements were soon seemingly confirmed by the behaviour of the rest of the family; Hatsuharu, the zodiac member possessed by the cow, proclaimed he hated Yuki, despite the fact that he had never met him before [Hatsuharu Sohma felt animosity towards Yuki during part of their childhood because of the story often told to Haru about the rat taking advantage of the stupid cow, which made Haru develop an inferiority complex towards his older cousin. However, after actually meeting Yuki face to face Haru was able to see Yuki's extreme kindness and the two became close allies, even to the point of proclaiming that Yuki was his first love.], his brother, Ayame, brushed off his cry for help, and Kyou always hated and blamed him for being the rat and wished that he would just die. Before Yuki knew it, Akito’s words started to seem like the truth. His life suddenly grew pitch-black like how she had told him many times before. He started believing that nobody cared, that he was not needed and soon, he began to lose hope. Nobody had wanted him. Not his parents, not his brother… no one.
However, a small light of hope entered Yuki’s life, if not for a moment, taking place when he was in elementary school. Yuki, as usual, avoided interacting with the people that surrounded him. Honestly though, he didn’t know how to interact with them… but also, he didn’t want to be hated anymore. Yet, he couldn’t avoid everything. During 2nd grade, a couple of boys invited him to play soccer and soon they had become friends.
It was his very first time. It was his first experience of having friends, real friends. He was happy, so happy that he didn’t know what to do with himself that in the end, he got carried away. One day, him and his friends decided to explore the “inside” of the Sohma estate together. All of them came through the secret entrance, and because of his happiness, Yuki forgot to be careful with girls. One of his female companions jokingly hugged him, causing him to turn into his rat form in front of all of them. The incident was a scandal, and Yuki begged and pleaded with his older cousin, Hatori not to erase his friends’ memories. They were the first friends Yuki had ever made… and he didn’t want to lose them. However, in the end, Akito’s words were law and he had lost. The memories of all his friends were all suppressed. In their eyes, their friendship had never existed.
Then one day, as Yuki was walking home, Kyou’s cap happened to fly onto the ground in front of him. Yuki picked it up, unbeknownst to him who it belonged to just as Kyou ran to him, an angry look on his face upon seeing who had taken it. The cat soon left, not wanting to pick up something that the filthy rat had touched, leaving Yuki alone, and crying his heart out. All he wanted was to become his friend, and yet, he was being rejected all over again.
Soon, Yuki’s fragile health turned for the worse. His body, already weakened by his bronchial tubes, couldn’t take the emotional pain the young Sohma was experiencing. Akito visited Yuki in his weak state and asked him, “Are you going to die… Yuki?” At this statement, Yuki was unsure what was weakening… his body, or his heart.
It is revealed that Yuki had met Tohru as a young girl. He had run away from the Sohma Estate when something deep inside his heart burst, and eventually he got lost. While continuing his walk, he saw Kyoko Honda surrounded by policemen and at first sight looked like she was crying. Yuki hid behind a pole and watched as Kyoko began to scream out the description of her daughter as an "adorable little girl with an adorable dress and adorable-looking pom-poms in her hair." Kyoko said that if she didn't find Tohru, she would "rain death on [the police's] miserable cursed soul," and started crying.
Yuki realized that there were some mothers who love their children that much, and then he recalled that in his haste to leave the Sohma House and get as far away as possible, he had in fact seen a girl; it was lost Tohru. Yuki backtracked and found Tohru, and was about to run back to Kyoko to tell her, but suddenly realized Tohru was following him. He decided to lead her back to her home (often pausing to let the young Tohru catch up), and when they had reached their destination, Yuki gave Tohru the hat he was wearing, mentally congratulating her for her good work. He quickly ran behind a corner to hide, before transforming into a rat, weakened from the run, struggling to breathe.
As Yuki watched Tohru and her mother reunite, he began to cry, because he was so grateful that he was able to help someone and feel needed at least once in his life. He also started to feel as though maybe the world was not as dark and hopeless as Akito told him it was.
“The world is more than darkness.”
With this new knowledge of the world, little Yuki decided to try and live the best life he could, despite being the cursed and hated rat as he was. He had, unfortunately, failed in that respect.
A few years had passed and he had grown weak again. His heart had grown weak. Hope turned into despair… and aspirations turned into jealousy. He had grown twisted. He had closed up the lid to his feelings yet again. He may have rebelled against the curse, having opted to enter a co-ed school, rather than the all-boy’s school he was recommended, but his insides had already grown dark, having unwillingly accepted his fate. His world had returned to the darkness, and that knowledge paid a price to this young man.
However, hope has found its way into Yuki once more, in the form of the rather clumsy, but kind-hearted Tohru. Just when he was about to lose all hope, she had shown him kindness beyond what he had been given in the past. She wanted to remain as his friend, even if her memories were to be erased. She accepted him, both himself as a human, and as his zodiac form. In short, Tohru had become the light in Yuki’s rather dark and gloomy world.
Slowly, yet surely, the nezumi is opening up this dark lid of his, and is showing the true Yuki hidden underneath all the shadows of his life. The Yuki Sohma that was lost and hidden, until now.
Current Events
Although he is the 2nd Sohma to be introduced to Honda Tohru within both the anime and the manga, Yuki had first encountered her when they were both young children and became her classmate upon entering Kaibara High. Having been recently orphaned due to her mother's unfortunate accident last May, Yuki discovers that Tohru is living in the woods within Sohma property as she waits for the renovation of her paternal grandfather's house to be finished. When a landslide causes Tohru to once again lose her home, Yuki and his older cousin Sohma Shigure, with whom he lives, offers her a place to stay in return for being the housekeeper of the house. It is while they are preparing her room that Sohma Kyou crashes through the roof in an effort to catch Yuki off-guard but only ends up with the Sohma curse being revealed to the young girl as she accidentally causes Kyou, Yuki and Shigeru to transform into their Zodiac animals.
Although they explain to her about the curse that afflicts 13 people of the Sohma family, Yuki confronts Tohru at school and informs her that there was a great possibility that the head of the Sohma family, Akito, would have her memories hypnotically erased by his other cousin, Sohma Hatori, if Akito so chooses or if she would reveal their secret. Tohru immediately promises to keep it, however, at the same time she asks Yuki that even if she were to have her memories erased she would like it if he were to still remain friends with her. This surprises Yuki as he had been convinced that if anybody were to know of his cursed rat form then they would be disgusted by him and take great care to avoid being near him. He is touched by her offer of friendship and soon develops feelings for the cheerful, albeit clumsy girl although he does not realize it nor does he know the true nature of it. Luckily, Akito decides against erasing Tohru's memories on the promise that she does not reveal it to outsiders before he orders Kyou to move into Shigure's house with the rest of the group. Kyou then transfer to their school and is enrolled into Tohru and Yuki's classes.
During their school's cultural festival, the class manages to convince Yuki to wear a dress in order to promote their onigiri booth. To his dismay and utter embarrassment, Momiji and Hatori, the family doctor, sees him in it when Hatori makes a surprise visit in order to check up on Yuki's health. Their secret is again nearly exposed when Momiji spontaneously hugs Tohru, causing him to transform to a rabbit. However, Yuki manages to save their secret as he successfully catches the attention of the people within the room using his sex appeal. When New Years arrived, both Yuki and Kyou decide against attending the obligatory juunishi banquet because they refuse to leave Tohru alone in the house. This causes Akito to be furious by their absence and causes her to attend Kaibara's opening ceremony where she meets Yuki and threatens him with punishment for not attending the New Year's banquet. Although Akito was interrupted by Tohru, she is pleased to see that Yuki is still afraid of her and is unable to go against her orders.
During a long-distance run for physical education, Sohma Hatsuharu is introduced as he stops Yuki and Kyou's race against each other in an effort to challenge Kyou to a fight. While their battle rages, Yuki suddenly has a bronchial attack that causes the fight between the cat and the ox to break up as Haru hugs Tohru to transform to his Zodiac form in order to bring Yuki home. It is during Haru's conversation with Tohru that he comments on how Yuki and Kyou have changed from how they were before since they fight less viciously and Yuki now smiles. Unbeknownst to Tohru, her friendship with the prince has really affected his views on life and has caused him to attempt to befriend others and live his life more freely than he did before.
After Yuki's double date with Tohru, Kyou and Kagura, once White Day came along, the trio goes on a trip to the Sohma onsen which was given to Tohru as a present by Momiji. When Tohru makes a failed attempt of playing table tennis, she manages to make Yuki laugh for the first time in such a long time as he is entertained by her seriousness and clumsiness, both of which he finds cute. As his White Day gift for Tohru, Yuki gives her a hair ribbon which he ties onto her hair and kisses gently before letting go.
In an uncharacteristic act of kindness (or rather in an attempt to escape from his editor), Shigure accompanied by Hatori take the household to a Sohma summer house in the mountains for Golden Week. Thinking that Kyou and Yuki's preoccupation since their visit to her mother's grave is somehow her fault, Tohru tries to apologize to them before she falls off the path and down a hill only to be caught by both Yuki and Kyou. The two males suddenly transform into their cursed forms and while the two return to their constant bickering, Tohru is relieved and is happy to see them back to normal. As they return back home from their vacation, Yuki and Tohru meet Haru holding a tiger in his arm who is in fact their other cousin, Sohma Kisa. When the two find out that she has stopped talking due to her being bullied at school for her orange hair, Yuki becomes upset and is deeply affected because he was and still is somewhat like her - withdrawing himself from the world in an effort to protect himself. With Tohru's help, Kisa begins to talk once again and soon is strong enough to go back to her school in an attempt to face her fears. Seeing his younger cousin's courage, Yuki silently promises himself to face his own fears of being worthless and begins this resolve by agreeing to become the next student council president of Kaibara High - a position he has constantly rejected until then.
One day, Kyou's "true form", a fearsome, foul-smelling monster was forcefully revealed by Kazuma (Kyou's adoptive father) to Tohru in an effort to show him that Kyou has changed because of Tohru and to show that she would accept the cat despite his ugly and terrifying other form. Yuki silently watches as Tohru runs after Kyou despite her fear from his room's window. Yuki is deeply troubled by the occurrence although he will not tell Tohru the reason for his distress. Tohru becomes worried by this and her worry is only slightly alleviated when Yuki tells her that when he is ready, he will explain everything to her one day. Later on that week, due to Tohru's pleas, Yuki is accompanied by Tohru to visit his nii-san, Ayame's shop. It is during their visit that they discover that his older brother runs a high-end cosplay boutique with his seamstress, Mine. Despite their protests, Mine forcefully shoves Tohru into the dressing room and dresses Tohru for Yuki to see. Although Tohru is deeply embarrassed by her outfit, Yuki compliments her and tells her he is glad that he came because he got to see a "cute Honda-san" which causes the girl to blush.
Although Yuki is still not fully aware of it, he is slowly but surely developing deep feelings for the brown-haired and clumsy girl - whether it is only a deep friendship, love or something else remains uncertain for now. However, what he does know is that he feels protective of her and will do anything to make her happy even to the point of visiting his older brother whom he has avoided and ignored for a long time. He is unsure what will develop between them but for now, he is content to remain as one of her close friends.
Hopes, Dreams, and GoalsAs a child, Yuki has always wanted loving parents, a home that no one would ever want to leave, in short, a happy home that he could go to, and friends who would smile at him, and someone who would love him. However, more recently, even though he still aspires for those things, he now wants to need someone and be needed in return and give that person something only he can give. He wants someone to love him and accept him completely for who is he. All in all, he wants to find his proof of existence: to show that he is alive.
Character UpdateYuki doesn't necessarily know what will happen with his relationship with his older brother, Ayame. After all, although he wishes so badly to become close to him, he cannot stand his extravagant and annoying personality. Also, he cannot forget how much his nii-san had hurt him in the past by ignoring him when he needed him the most. Still, he silently hopes that they will get along as brothers one day in the future.
Other than that, Yuki is also apprehensive about his future position as the Student Council President. He is afraid that he will fail and that his fear of being considered worthless and unwanted will become real. However, because he has promised himself, he will not withdraw from his position and can only hope for the best when the time comes and he starts his Student Council life.
Currently however, Yuki just is enjoying spending his time with Tohru and the rest of his classmate whom he has slowly begun interacting with. His bickering with the baka neko has yet to stop, and while the two are far from getting along, at the very least their fights have become less vicious and more like playful banters - or not, it really depends on how you look at it. He is starting a new school year and is balancing the rest of his free time doing school work, housework and tending his 'secret base'.
